Edmund John Millington Synge was an Irish scenarist, poet, novelist, wrote about his travels abroad and collected mythological books. He was a leading personality in the Irish Literary Revival and co-founded the Abbey Theatre. He is most famous for his stage play The Playboy of the Western World, which instigated a mad dash in Dublin in its inauguration at the Abbey Theatre. He was from a wealthy Anglo-Irish descent, his opuses primarily relate to the Roman Catholic poverty-stricken people of Ireland and with what he understood as the indispensable atheism of their standpoint. He suffered from Hodgkin’s disease, a metastatic cancer that was at that time terminal.
