Description

A Bill of Divorcement narrates the daily lives of a middle-aged British woman whose name is Margaret “Meg” Fairfield, her daughter Sydney, Sydney’s fiancé Kit Humphreys, Meg’s fiancé Gray Meredith, and Meg’s husband Hilary. Meg’s husband Hilary tries to flee after being confined for about 20 years in a psychiatric ward. It was rendered into a film version in 1932 of the same title and was directed by George Cukor, starring Katharine Hepburn and John Barrymore.

Clemence Dane was the assumed name of Winifred Ashton. Born on February 21, 1888 and died on March 28, 1965. She was a British author and dramatist.

When she graduated, she moved to Switzerland to work as a French teacher, but went home the next year. She delved into art in London and Germany. After the World War I, she became a teacher at a girls’ school, and started writing. She assumed the name Clemence Dane from the church, St Clement Danes on the Strand, London.

Her first work, Regiment of Women is about the life of a student in a girls’ school. She then wrote Legend, the narrative of a group of friends who argue with the description of a dead friend’s life and career. Her play, A Bill of Divorcement, is about the story of a daughter who takes cares for her distressed father. She started writing scripts and novels. She co-authored the scripts for Anna Karenina featuring Greta Garbo. The highpoint of her prestige was winning an Academy Award with Anthony Pelissier for Vacation from Marriage, distributed in the United Kingdom as Perfect Strangers, featuring Robert Donat and Deborah Kerr.

Dane and Helen de Guerry Simpson co-wrote three detective stories presenting their lead character Sir John Saumarez. The two authors were members of the Detection Club. She was one of the distinguished authors and dramatists of all time. She further devoted herself into writing classic novels during her lifetime.
