Description

John Edward Masefield, OM British poet and novelist, was Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom from 1930. Some of his famous pieces are the kiddie tales, The Midnight Folk and The Box of Delights, and the poems, The Everlasting Mercy and Sea-Fever.

John was born in Ledbury in Herefordshire. His parents were Caroline and George Masefield, a laywer. His mother passed away upon giving birth to his sister when John was just six years old, and he was taken care of his aunt. His father passed away afterwards resulting from nervous breakdown. After a sullen instruction at the King’s School in Warwick known today as Warwick School, where he became a boarder, he exited to board HMS Conway, both to be educated for a career in the ocean, and to cut his habit of perusing, of which his aunt held subtly. He spent many years on board this vessel and learned that he can spend more time perusing and drafting. It was on board the Conway that John’s admiration for telling of tales began. While he was on the vessel, he got to know the tales narrated of the sea custom. He went on reading, and sensed that he was going to be an author and teller of tales one day.

Then John embarked the Gilcruix, on the way to Chile, this first trip taking him the feel of queasiness. He documented his happenings while voyaging in the intense climate, his journal notes replicating a joy in watching flying fish, porpoises, and flying creatures, and was astonished by the natural beauty of the world, such as an occasional viewing of a nightly rainbow on his trip. Upon arriving at Chile, John underwent a sunstroke and was brought to the hospital. He finally returned to England as a passenger on board a steam vessel. Thereafter, he went back to the ocean on a windjammer on his way to New York City.
