Description

Known mainly for his series of novels entitled the Chronicles of Barsetshire, Anthony Trollope was one of the most influential English novelist of the Victorian Era. His main topics of interest involved politics and the social intrigues of 19th century England, where most of his novels were set. Despite his literary popularity having diminished near the end of his life, Trollope’s works lived on, and gained renewed recognition during the 20th century.

Kept in the Dark was among the last novels published by the acclaimed author, who, in fact, died the following year. The relatively basic plot of the book surrounds Cecilia Holt, who has ended her engagement with Sir Francis Geraldine after feeling neglected by her fiancé. A woman of exceptional beauty, Cecilia goes abroad, where she meets Mr. George Western. Despite the fact that her new love interest confides in her, the woman avoids telling him about her previous engagement. Will she be able to start fresh, or is her new pursuit destined for failure?

Trollope once again manages to recreate a vivid portrayal of the complex world of England’s social life in the Victorian period. His insight and the particular complexity of his main character are the main elements that make this novel a truly memorable read.

Kept in the Dark was initially published in 1882 in eight installments featured in Good Words – a monthly periodical in the United Kingdom that became for its numerous popular publications dating back to 1860. Despite failing to gain the recognition of Trollope’s more recognized novels and prose, it still became a worthy novel that even modern day readers can enjoy.

Fans of Victorian literature, and most especially those who are already acquainted with the works of Anthony Trollope, will delight in the subtle intricacies and subplots of this novel, and you’ll find it can truly be worth every second of your time.
