The New Texans had a reputation for not only being reluctant to listen to politicians, but on this strange world of the future, assassinating politicians seemed to be a common practice. Nevertheless, the Solar League ambassador had to travel to the Lone Star planet New Texas, in order to bring them news of the s’Srauff, a canine-descended race that would soon mount an attack. But will he be able to convince them before it’s too late? And what of the New Texans’ “fearless” or somewhat ignorant approach to the matter?

H. Beam Piper is known for his engaging sci-fi tales, and Lone Star Planet is definitely one of them. Set in a universe where humans manage to colonize other planets and survive quite well among the stars, it explores issues of politics that were current in Piper’s time, and are still very current today.

The characters themselves are believable and designed to build up to a politically charged situation that involves volatile circumstances and a few unusual twists that make the story all the more enjoyable. Written in Piper’s distinctive, highly entertaining style, Lone Star Planet will undoubtedly captivate you, and the ideas in the book will make most readers feel like they are not only part of events, but part of the world that the New Texans are attempting to protect.

The storyline is also quite believable, since many of the original settlers on the planet were, in fact, Texans, and the context of the story, as well as the circumstances associated with the planet’s challenges (such as the dangerous wildlife) makes Lone Star Planet all the more realistic.

A catchy plot, a unique planetary government, interesting dialogue and the excellent descriptions make this book one of the best science fiction novels you may have read in recent memory. Sci-fi enthusiasts of all ages will be taken in, as they read what is often considered one of H. Beam Piper’s most successful works.
