These are the historical facts, but there is very little one can find out about Joan of Arc and who she really was as a young girl – unless you read the Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc written so diligently by Mark Twain, one of the most distinguished authors of the early 20th century.

The book, provided in two volumes, presents an account of Joan of Arc’s life, as depicted by a close friend. She narrates the story from the saint’s earliest years, as she grew up as a simple maiden in the French countryside, and later became involved in the war against the British and in French politics.

Twain sheds light on all of Joan of Arc’s successes and challenges during her short life, and especially on the manner in which the King has abandoned and betrayed her, even though she was the reason why he had become king in the first place.

A somewhat sad, but inspiring true story about just how much even a young girl can achieve through her conviction and determination.
