Description

After Mat Burke is rescued from a shipwreck, he could scarcely imagine the type of woman he is about to meet. Strong, decisive and unafraid of taking charge, Anna Christie is a woman with a difficult past and a future that both Mat and Anna’s father, Old Chris will try to determine for her. But what are the ghosts of Anna’s past that she tries at first to conceal; and is it possible that her new love affair may spell the end of her youth’s struggles? This award-winning drama was initially written by Eugene O’Neill (1888 – 1953) in 1919 under the title Chris Christopherson, and it was later revised to its final form. It was performed for the first time at the Vanderbilt Theatre in 1921, and achieved significant popularity on Broadway before winning the 1922 Pulitzer Prize. The story is essentially about the life and controversial struggles of Anna, who was raped during her years living on a farm, and later became a prostitute after spending a short time as a nurse’s assistant. The controversy begins when Anna’s peers and the audience learns of her choice of becoming a prostitute and of her later intentions of redeeming herself. Although, by modern standards, this turn of events is definitely not unheard of, the manner in which themes such as prostitution and rape were openly discussed, combined with O’Neill’s masterful vision and talent for writing, made this one of the most popularly acclaimed dramatic productions of the early 20th century.Anna Christie is just as enjoyable and introspective a read today as it was almost 100 years ago. Anna’s strong and intense personality can literally be felt through the pages, as readers will no doubt eagerly await the next twists and turns that this exciting drama has to offer in each of its four action-filled acts.
