The controversy begins when Annas peers and the audience learns of her choice of becoming a prostitute and of her later intentions of redeeming herself. Although, by modern standards, this turn of events is definitely not unheard of, the manner in which themes such as prostitution and rape were openly discussed, combined with ONeills masterful vision and talent for writing, made this one of the most popularly acclaimed dramatic productions of the early 20th century.Anna Christie is just as enjoyable and introspective a read today as it was almost 100 years ago.
