A Spinner in the Sun

Description

A Spinner in the Sun is a novel by Myrtle Reed, one of the most popular, best-selling female writers of the first years of the 20th century, an author of cookbooks, novels and short stories. Mostly known for her 1902 book entitled Lavender and Old Lace and one of her later volumes entitled At the Sign of the Jack’o Lantern, Reed published more than a dozen of books and she also worked as a professional journalist for many years, all her writings dealing with subjects of importance for the life of women in an insightful manner and A Spinner in the Sun being one of her lesser known, but excellent stories. The novel is a sweet and romantic story about a woman called Evelina who returns home after having spent a few years away. After coming home, the lady lives a secluded life and wears a veil all the time, never allowing anyone to see her face. However, the situation soon changes – a suitor emerges and love has the power of convincing the lady to come out from her hiding. The old-fashioned, sentimental story celebrates womanhood and is full of powerful, colorful and varied characters as well as of strong emotions. Evelina suffers from depression – or, in more romantic terms, from a broken heart, but she eventually finds redemption through true love. The story mixes misery and dreams come true, sadness, desolation and hope, all presented in Reed’s typical sensitive, insightful and often very humorous style. Readers, especially ladies, young and old alike, who chose this novel are certainly in for more than a few tears and laughs. The romantic story is a great get-away from the stress and hassle we all experience in our lives – if you want to relax, but still experience powerful feelings, Reed’s book makes the perfect choice.
