Although presented only as a shorter introduction to the later part of the book, the stories of how widow Lydia Lanski meets and marries a farm youth by the name of Brangwen and how her own daughter Anna grows up and marries a cousin by the name of Tom Brangwen are quite intriguing and exciting, both from a psychological and romantic point of view.The longest part of the book, however, follows the development,coming of age, life and love interests of Ursula, the rebellious and highly opinionated daughter of Tom and Anna.Whats most interesting about the intrigues and lessons revolving around Ursulas life is that her own personality relates very much to that of the author himself. Her love and sexual life is further presented in the sequel Women in Love, an equally controversial and interesting work written by D. H. Lawrence.
