Description

Readers interested in what life was like in the Canadian wilderness, more exactly in the North of Manitoba, at the beginning of the 20th century and in the heroic struggle of humans to stay alive among the harshest conditions imaginable will enjoy Curwood’s novel for sure.Curwood’ story revolves around strong characters, able to face the most incredible hardships, but this is hardly the only feature that makes the novel so great. The story comes with a noble and very sweet love story line and there is also a sufficient amount of mystery involved to make the novel a real page turner. It all starts with the death of a young mother not long after she delivered a healthy and beautiful baby girl. While on her death bed, her sufferings are eased by the sounds of a violin, beautifully played by a young boy, half French and half Indian, who came to the house in hope to be given food in return for his music. The young woman dies, but there are two men who swear to protect the beautiful baby girl and from then on the story becomes an account of the life of these three characters over a period of almost two decades. The Honor of the Big Snows, like many other novels and stories written by Curwood, center on adventure and nature – two topics that the author knew very much about, being himself an adventurer and a well-known conservationist. Most of his stories are set in the wilderness and they feature not only human characters, but extraordinary animals such as wolfs and grizzly bears as well and there is always a love line and some mystery to enrich the stories, too – no wonder Curwood’s novels have been so successfully adapted to the big screen as well as to television.
