Description

Elizabeth Mary Braddon is one of the most popular novelists in the Victorian Era. She became world renowned with her sensation novel Lady Audley’s Secret published in 1862. Her later novel, The Lovels of Arden, follows in the same Gothic Romantic style that has brought fame as well as fortune to the talented writer and focuses on the endeavors of a young woman and her entangled relationships in 20th century Belgium.

The novel shows Clarissa Lovel and how she lives the good life market with privileges in their ancient inherited Arden Court. She is sent off the continent to complete her stories, yet after returning home she meets a young and handsome gentleman named George Fairfax who tells her that her beloved Arden Court has just been sold by her father in order to repay his massive debts.

She returns home only to find that life in a cottage is not what she wanted for herself. While she does try to do everything in her power to make her father satisfied, things aren’t going well. That until a friend of the family, Lady Laura, invites Clarissa to her mention. Here she meets George Fairfax again and the two fall in love with one another. However, George is engaged and Clarissa tries to stop her passionate love for him to get her into a bigamous relationship.

Eventually, Clarissa’s father suggests that the new owner of the Arden Court, Mister Granger, is not such a bad match, and that the marriage would save him from dying anonymous in a forgotten cottage. The story becomes even more entangled with her efforts to stop George from forcing her to draw her into a sinful relationship.

The Lovels of Arden will keep readers guessing until the end, with a finale that is as unpredictable as is common among the Victorian Era Gothic Romances.
