Description

Mark Twain plays the role of author, main protagonist and narrator in A Tramp Abroad – his account of his journeys through Germany, Italy and Switzerland. With accurate and beautifully designed descriptions of real locations in the Swiss and German Alps, charming tall tales the likes of which no one else can embellish quite to the same extent, and an insightful commentary on European life and culture, the book will surprise and delight you through its remarkably flowing narrative, detailed descriptions and at times hilarious passages.

There’s no doubt about the fact that Mark Twain always has something good to say, even through his lesser known or less well-received works. While this book is no Huckleberry Finn, its intuitively brilliant style and Twain’s oftentimes deep insight on his perspective of Europe will undoubtedly keep most readers glued to their chairs to the very end. Also, with the author’s unpredictable sense of adventure and rich storytelling talent, you never know where you’ll end up, as you are slowly absorbed by the tale.

With a good balance between humorous and serious passages that Twain alternates in his distinctive way, there won’t really be any dull moments as you read through the book. From his account of the German language’s peculiarities, to a hilarious story he recounts about his attempt to pretend to know a woman who seems to be very keen on asserting that she is an old acquaintance of his, the author takes us through a journey back in time and a tour of Europe that even the most imaginative of artists and storytellers wouldn’t be able to come up with.

Probably the only thing the book lacks is a few extra hundred pages that could have prolonged Twain’s droll and delightful adventures, as he probes virtually every facet of the topics, places and circumstances he encounters throughout his journeys
