Description

Frances Hodgson Burnett was one of the most revered and respected romance novelists of the late 19th century, being responsible for many novels and novelettes that still melt readers’ hearts today. Among her numerous well-received works include novels such as Sara Crewe and Haworth’s, excellent children’s stories such as The Secret Garden, and even beautiful plays like A Lady of Quality.

Theo is a short novelette about an impressionable and quite beautiful young girl of 16 who falls in love with an intelligent young man named Denis. Theo’s enchanting beauty and Denis’ intelligent and methodical, yet very pleasant character makes the two ideally suited for each other. Readers will quickly be able to tell just how easy the decision to stay together should be, at least under normal circumstances.

The romance shared by Theo and Denis, however, starts out on a difficult path, as he is engaged to be married, and she does not want to intrude on his. Between strong emotions and an even stronger conviction to do the right thing, Burnett showers us with beautiful descriptions, interesting twists and an overall well-paced plot line that will make it quite difficult to even put the book down for a short pause.

Burnett’s storyline also includes many intriguing and complex characters aside from the beautiful girl and the intelligent young man she fell in love with. Denis’ sister and his fiancée Priscilla are both well-developed and well-rounded characters who will delight you with their presence and make the novel even more interesting.

For a heartfelt love story that doesn’t seem like much at first compared to F.H. Burnett’s other works, Theo will definitely grow on you, and may even surprise you with her empathetic character and unique traits. The story itself will be more than delightful, offering a beautiful glimpse of past romances as an escape from the somewhat cynical and unsympathetic world we live in today.
