Description

The Vicar of Wrexhill is without a doubtone of the best anti-Evangelical works of literaryart in existence.Frances Trollope’s masterful, satirical and extremely well-informed approach to thetopic is reflectedby thedepiction of thebook’s maincharacter,Reverend William Cartwright whichwas inspiredby a realman of the clothwhom the author despised,as she instead upheld thevalues represented by the AnglicanChurch.

This satiricalnovel follows one of Frances Trollope’s favoritetopics of debate, while also allowing her freerange incriticizing the “Victorian” values ofthe time – which were,in fact Evangelicalvalues – even as the Evangelicalchurch held a place of great powerduring the mid-19th century.

Frances had her own fair share of misfortune, however, part of whichwas also at the base of inspiration for The Vicar of Wrexhill. After thebankruptcy of her husband,Miss Trollope had to beginwriting for a livingto support herfamily, and a period of great financialdifficulty followed, during which the family had to leavetheir old house – ironically, later bought by the same ReverendCunningham.

The bookdeeply satirizes the views and conduct of WilliamCartwright, especially regarding theReverend’s lust for power and willingness to go as far as he needs to secure it.The plot unfolds aroundhis pursuit of a rich widow, whom he manipulates to control her estate. It also follows Cartwright’s fanatical views on topics like religion and sexuality, as well as his outreaching influence on women who would openly speak up against his manipulative ways.

While exploring a touchy subject that was quite problematic to address even during Victorian times, Frances Trollope manages to keep a lighthearted attitude which makes The Vicar of Wrexhill all the more enjoyable, while being in many ways – according to experts – still being an accurate depiction of some of the later effects of the church’s influence, some of which have arrived well after Trollope’s time.
