The Trail of the Lonesome Pine – A Beautiful Tale of Love and Transition

Taking place in the Kentucky mountains prior to the time when the coal mining life took over in the areas in and around Eastern Kentucky, The Trail of the Lonesome Pine is a delightful, deep and insightful novel about love and the changes that civilization brings to the world around us. While many times, that change might be welcome, it can be important to exercise caution, so that we don’t ruin something that may have been not only comfortable and beautiful, but also sacred; to ourselves and our peers.

John Fox Jr. takes us through a story with many entrancing descriptions about the life that local farmers, families and mountaineers have led in Kentucky, before the coal mining companies arrived in the mid-19th century, and not only devastated the land, but essentially took over the people’s lives.

The story itself takes place in the mountains that border Big Stone Gap in Virginia, and focuses on the Tolliver and Fallin households – two families that have been involved in a feud for a very long time. At the dawn of the coal mining age, life in the mountains is beginning to change, and this change is severely impacting the two families, as well as the life of June Tolliver in particular, a young girl who quickly falls in love with a “furriner” who goes by the name of John Hale.

The entire novel is actually divided into two distinct stories: the love story of June and John, as they try to find a new life in a changing age, and the influx of foreigners, as the coal mining industry in the region blossoms, and the locals’ way of life is changed forever.

Whether you are passionate about the lifestyle and beauty of Kentucky, as it was before the arrival of the coal miners, or you just want to enjoy a delightful, well-paced story that will enrich your heart, The Trail of the Lonesome Pine can offer the perfect reading experience.
