When Allan Dorris, a stranger without a past arrives out of the blue and purchases the Locks, the people living in this secluded town become more than suspicious. Although Dorris eventually marries and seems to have a happy life, it seems that the mystery of the Locks soon catches up with him…

Howe’s thrilling tale will have create a myriad of mixed emotions within even the hearts of modern readers who are not necessarily used to the writing style and storytelling approach of this era.
