Description

The Mystery of Mary by Grace Livingston Hill is often referred to as a Christian romance, one out the one hundred or more books written by the author and inspired from Christian faith. Hill started writing for a living after the death of her first husband when she was left with no financial means and two young children.

The Mystery of Mary is a short, but very intensive book. The protagonist is a young man called Tyron who falls in love with a beautiful, but very secretive lady who refuses to share too much information about herself or about the peril she is faced with. The story continues as you can expect of a romance – there is detour, hindrance, there are evil characters trying to rob Mary of her inheritance and to obstruct the course of true love as well, but love prevails in the end and the two young lovers get married.

The book is considered to be less centered on Christian values than other books by Grace Livingston Hill, but spirituality is still an important element that makes the novel really special. The other feature that accounts for the book’s success is unpredictability – though the plot includes the components that can be expected of a romantic story, they are organized in a succession that is unusual, thus making an eventful story that is not short of suspense and keeps the reader’s attention engaged to the very last word.

First published in 1912, the novel brought the author success and popularity and it has not ceased to be popular ever since it first came out. If you are looking for a beautifully written, wholesome and old-fashioned love story for yourself or to entertain young girls and get them to like reading, The Mystery of Mary by Grace Livingston Hill is an excellent choice.
