Description

Augusta Huiell Seaman is mostly known for her excellent stories for children, but this book shows her talent in an entirely different genre, mystery fiction that is equally suitable for adults and young readers. Written and published more than 100 years ago, in 1915, The Boarded Up House still makes a very refreshing read, entertaining contemporary fans of adventure stories, young and old as well.

The two main characters of the story are Joyce and Cynthia, two high school girls who live in the same neighborhood, the houses they live in being separated by only an old, boarded-up house abandoned by its inhabitants more than four decades before. The two girls break into the house to find out why it was abandoned and the break-in is followed by remarkable events soon.

The story of the novel and the style it comes presented in are equally remarkable. All the action takes place without investigations carried out by police officers and Seaman does not need any dead bodies and blood to construct an excellent plot. The puzzle to be solved is more emotional than practical in nature and the outcome is riveting and astonishing, too.

The book is interesting not only because it provides a really exciting story that will keep the reader’s attention engaged from beginning to end, but also because it provides insight into what life in America was like at the beginning of the 20th century. No wonder the atmosphere and the historical background are so perfectly penned – Augusta Huiell Seaman was known not only as a novelist, but also as an author of historical fiction. She was also very prolific, having published over 40 books during her literary career between 1910 and 1950, most of which enjoyed great popularity when they were published and afterwards as well.
