Description

Published in 1921, Snow-Blind by Katharine Newlin Burt is one of the author’s first books, a romantic story featuring four characters spending time in a snow-covered cabin in the wilderness.

The cabin has been used as a shelter by Hugh for fifteen years. He lives there with his younger brother, Pete and one of their neighbors, a woman is also there when Hugh rescues a young lady called Sylvie from the forest. Sylvie is blinded by the snow, so in her mind she creates a picture of her new acquaintances – picture that does not necessarily match their real appearance or character.

Little by little, Sylvie comprehends the tense and intricate relationships among the other three people in the cabin and participates in resolving their conflicts. In the beginning, she sees Hugh as her rescuer, the strong man who will keep her from any harm and starts worshiping him, but things are not that simple and there is a lot for her to learn about the past and the motivations of the others. Hugh’s brother is falling in love with the girl, but he must keep his feelings to himself for fear of Hugh.

What makes Burt’s novel really special is the psychological insight and the peculiar atmosphere. The topos of blindness is explored by the author to the fullest and the bright white, undisturbed wilderness provides the perfect backdrop for the intensity that characterizes the book. The author definitely proves that she was not only an expert of the human soul and of storytelling, but also familiar with the wilderness. She spent a lot of time in Moose, Wyoming, where she and her husband owned a ranch, so she had first-hand experience of what life was like in the mountains and how the harshness of nature affects one’s perspective over life.
