Description

One of Lester del Rey’s more obscure and unusual novels, The Sky Is Falling has quite the literal title, in that it’s actually a story where the sky and the balance of the world is in the process of being destroyed due to an unknown force. While del Rey’s stories are usually strictly science fiction, this one has a curiously prevalent element of magic in it that makes the entire book all the more enjoyable.

Lester del Rey is known throughout the literary community as one of the most brilliant authors of science fiction of the mid-20th century. His imprint on the genres of sci-fi and fantasy have been felt quite deeply, primarily due to novels such as Moon of Mutiny, Tunnel Through Time, Attack from Atlantis and, of course, this marvelous little book entitled The Sky is Falling.

The story follows the initially confused venture of a man who is transported to a strange version of Earth that looks more like the time of Ancient Egypt. Computer engineer Dave Hansen soon finds out that science and physics no longer work here, and instead, this is a world of magic and mystery, where the sun and the moon are just small specks of light moving through the sky dome. Summoned to “fix” the broken sky, Hansen has to find a way of making sense out of this fantastic world, and saving it before it’s too late. Even if he does, will he ever be able to return to “his own” Earth?

The premise of the story is an interesting one to say the least, and it has to do with the attempt of reconciling the logical and intuitive minds. While the start of the novel may seem confusing, all soon falls into place, and del Rey’s masterful, empathic style and stunning descriptions complement a detailed and unique story that will keep readers interested from start to finish.
