Description

Edward Bulwer-Lytton has written what can quite possibly be considered one of the best books about the catastrophe of Pompeii that were ever written. A story that basically has everything from love, magic and drama to betrayal, tragedy and poisoning, Last Days of Pompeii is filled with fascinating and exciting intrigues played out in the most unexpected ways by characters who will remain in your memory.

The story centers around an Athenian who goes by the name of Glaucus. He is in love with Ione, the love of his life, who reciprocates his feelings, and seeks to marry him. One of the most interesting characters in the story, however, is Glaucus’ beautiful blind slave girl, Nydia – one of the deepest and most romantic characters you will encounter.

From the plots set together by Apaecides, Ione’s brother, to the despicable character of Arbaces – a rich, powerful and highly knowledgeable individual who is clearly the main villain of the story, Last Days of Pompeii that will keep you glued to your chair through well-orchestrated events that will keep your attention right down to the end, until that horrific day in 79 AD, when Mount Vesuvius finally erupts.

Bulwer-Lytton creates a genuine sounding tale that also offers an accurate depiction of the famous eruption, and is actually a quite plausible version of the lives led by the people of Pompeii, based on historical facts. Although the story is purely fictional, it will leave you feeling like you actually experienced those last few days in the region of Campania of Italy.

Pompeii was essentially wiped from the face of the Earth because of a natural catastrophe that comes only once in many generations. However, stories will likely continue to be told, and speculations will keep being made about the city’s complex and fascinating intrigues for a very long time.
