Description

No one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man’s and yet as mortal as his own…
The War of the Worlds is one of the earliest and most remarkable science-fiction pieces ever created. It defines a clash between two civilizations and species, the Martians and the humans who are on the verge of total extermination.

The first part of the book, The Coming of the Martians, opens with the scientific community being very intrigued by what it seems to be a multitude of explosions on Mars’ surface, the cause of the phenomenon remaining undetermined.

The narrator’s identity remains a mystery for the reader, except for small things, like the fact that he is a married man and he probably has inclinations to scientific research and witnesses the invasion of the Martians, whom he describes as horribly looking creatures.

The impact the landing of the big metallic flying ships has on the population is huge, given the fact that the action is set in the idyllic landscape of Surrey, during the reign of Queen Victoria, a period of peace and prosperity, when the power of the British Empire reached its climax.

Although, in the beginning of the invasion, the inhabitants of the area where the ships land feel themselves protected by the presence of the military troops, the Martians succeed to annihilate any opposition, the sense of security being soon replaced by desolation and chaos.

The second part, The Earth under the Martians, presents the terror and destruction the extraterrestrial creatures leave behind, using powerful weapons created with incredibly advanced technologies. Soon, the narrator discovers that the main purpose the invaders pursue with their coming to Earth is not to destroy the planet, but to feed on human blood. In the light of this terrifying fact, does the mankind still have a chance, or is it doomed forever?
