Description

Written in the style and featuring the philosophical depth that make Philip K. Dick novels so popular, Mr. Spaceship explores the potential offered by using a spaceship that can be driven using nothing more complex and more powerful than the human brain itself.

First published in 1953 in Imagination, one of America’s most popular science fiction magazines, and republished several times since then, Mr. Spaceship is certainly one of Dick’s best stories. It takes the reader to the distant future when humans are at war with a deadly species called the Yuks. The Yuks use life-form based spaceships that humans have been unable to defeat. However, one day, a group of scientists led by Philip Kramer seem to be able to come up with a solution: they build a spaceship controlled by a human brain separated from the body, but completely functional and conscious, donated by Professor Thomas, an old dying scientist.

The spaceship is built, melting the power of the human brain with the capacities of a machine, but strange things start happening during the first test drive and the team of scientists discovers that the donor of the brain has made changes to the ship in order to get full control over it. The team deserts the spaceship, but the suspenseful and exciting story is still far from over, having lots of more adventures, events and dangers in store for the reader.

The story is eventful, but not very detailed – after all, it does not have to be, PKD always offers his readers sufficient space to fill with their own imagination. The short book is full of exciting ideas, and the story ends with a surprising, but refreshing and ultimately happy ending, provided in a way that only the greatest master of science fiction is able to pull off.
