A Masterpiece Of The Science Fiction Genre In The Brigands Of The Moon

Ray Cummings is regarded as the founding father of the science fiction pulp genre. He has managed to thrill millions of readers worldwide with his vivid depictions of distant planets, intergalactic conflicts and unlikely heroes. In his popular novel Brigands of the Moon, Cummings manages to approach a subject that is yet to be delved into while creating an action that will hold everyone on the edge of their seats.

The hero of the story is someone named Gregg Haljan. He has stopped his giant spaceship, Planetara, in the Moon’s orbit in order to pick up some Moon ore from the extracting company Grantline. This rate metal is vital in fueling most of Earth’s technologies, and this makes it an attraction to many greedy people. Grant knows that staying in plain sight with his giant ship is not a great idea but there is nothing he can do about it.

His ship eventually comes to the attention of Martian pirates who seize it along with Gregg and the precious cargo. He hadn’t expected the Martians to use such clever trickery, and now he is in their hands. However, what they haven’t thought about is that he himself will become a space pirate and pay them back in their own way.

Ray Cummings may have well anticipated a valuable resource on the Moon that will probably be harvested soon. What he believed to be rate metal is an isotope called Helium 3. Just like other visionaries such as Jules Verne, he manages to create a thrilling adventure while predicting new technologies and events. Brigands of the Moon will certainly be enjoyed by both science fiction pulp magazine fans as well as people with a taste for a good book coming from one of the great masters of the genre.
