Description

The Passionate Pilgrim by William Shakespeare

Six collections of poetry are attributed to the great poet and playwright William Shakespeare: The Passionate Pilgrim was one of them. The collection was thought to be published in 1599 by William Jaggard, who famously published the First Folio collection of Shakespeare’s plays. However, it is now known that although five of the poems were written by Shakespeare, the authorship of the remaining poems are disputed and are thought to be written by others, including Christopher Marlowe and Sir Walter Raleigh.

The collection contains 15 sonnets and poems. Shakespeare authored poems I, II, III, V, and XVII. The third poem is an extract from Shakespeare’s play Love’s Labour Lost. All of the poems in this collection are high-caliber classic examples of Elizabethan poetry. The title The Passionate Pilgrim is indicative of the romantic nature of these sonnets and poems.
