Description

The Dragon of Wantley is a fictional work by Owen Wister very well known as the novelist of The Virginian in 1892. Circulated by Lipincott Press, the tale is a rib-tickling “burlesque” – in the novelist’s denotation, about the “true” Dragon tale. It is a story of love which took place during the Christmas season at the start of the 13th century. The novel was an instant success, became immensely popular with four editions for the ten following years.

Owen Wister was a United States novelist, historian and “father” of western fiction. He is generally commemorated for his novel, The Virginian and a biography of American Civil War Lt. Gen. and 18th President Ulysses S. Grant.

Owen started his career as a writer in 1882, producing the burlesque book The New Swiss Family Robinson. The fiction was very well celebrated that famous Mark Twain himself wrote a letter to Owen, privately flattering it. Owen went to the American West to spend mostly his summers, going out to the Territory of Wyoming as his first travel; he also prepared to play bigger games, go out and fish trout, meet and talk with the Indians, and spend his nights in the wood lands. Same as his closest pal Teddy Roosevelt, Owen was pleased with the tradition, culture and territory of the region. He was “…struck with wonder and delight, had the eye to see and the talent to portray the life unfolding in America. After six journeys [into the dying “wild west”] for pleasure, he gave up the profession of law…,” and turned into the novelist he is known best as. When he went to Yellowstone, Owen happened to know the western artisan Frederic Remington; who also became his close friend for a lifetime.
