Description
The Consolation of Philosophy is probably one of the most valuable philosophical writings from between the fall of the Roman Empire and the rise of Medieval Europe. This work of philosophical brilliance is written under the most extreme and grave of circumstances by prominent philosopher Boethius, whose philosophical knowledge and religious views clashed, as he was unjustly brought to the gallows, his death assured. As Boethus awaits his fate, he engages into a fierce and creative conversation with Lady Philosophy herself, and turns to the Divine for trying to gain some form of peace and understanding on the nature of free will, the existence of God, the concepts of good and evil, and the reassurance that wisdom and intelligence can overcome the greatest of concerns in life. Boethus’ lamentations are presented in lyrical form, as songs or poems set before each chapter, which is then used by the great Lady to address and solve each concern in part. The dialogue is remarkably lively, and in no measure resembles a dull and boring philosophical treatise. Instead, it is able to captivate through keen awareness and surprising rhetoric, delving deep into the sharpest and most significant issues of life and death. The Consolation of Philosophy is a book that anyone interested – or haunted by – the unjustness of life and the difficulties of learning the secrets of existence should read.It outlines and provides a viable philosophical answer to many of the concerns that are still seen as current today, while being set in front of a surprisingly modern background of betrayal and tragedy which Boethus finds in his own insurmountable challenges. This philosophical writing was compulsory reading for medieval scholars, and has also inspired numerous thinkers, authors, playwrights and poets throughout the following centuries.
