The Foolish Dictionary

Description

This amusing and entertaining reference was written by Charles Wayland Towne using the pseudonym Gideon Wurdz and was circulated in 1904. In the first pages of the book, Charles noted that it is “An exhausting work of reference to un-certain English words, their origin, meaning, legitimate and illegitimate use…” A concise and delightful dictionary which interprets some logical words in many out of the ordinary ways. Some may find that the words are odd and quite unconventional because it is indeed The Foolish Dictionary.

It contains chapters on the Letters A – Z, Postage and Postal Information, A Few Mythological and Classical Names, and Legal and Local Holidays in the United States.

Charles Wayland Towne was born in New Hampshire, and when he completed his schooling from Brown University, he was connected with the staff of the New York Times. At the siege of the Great War, Towne carried out recreation for rallies in France.

When Towne stopped working, he fled to Tucson, and created his initial newspaper hurtle, writing for national publications. Repeatedly writing with his pseudonym of Gideon Wurdz, he also wrote hilarious and thoughtful stories, such as George Peabody–American Philanthropist.

He was given tributes through these valuable sources comprising: Charles Towne Rites Held, by Tucson Daily Citizen, Adventurer Towne Dies at 89, by Arizona Daily Star.

In 1903, he became a newspaper correspondent and literary work in Boston. Between 1905 – 1908, he owned the public White Echo in Bethlehem, New Hampshire. In 1909, he became the owner and editor of the Daily Evening Leader in Newburyport, Massachusetts and Newburyport Morning Herald.

In 1911, he was the editor of the Cambridge Daily Standard. He worked for publicity with Ivy L. Lee for 5 short years. In 1920 – 1941, he became the publicity director of the Anaconda Copper Mining Company and Montana Power Company.
