Description

The Nicomachean Ethics is Aristotle’s most important and best-known writing about ethics, a major work consisting of ten books. The title probably refers to Nicomachus, Aristotle’ son to whom the philosopher dedicates the book, but it may also refer to Aristotle’s father, also named Nicomachus.

The principle theme of the Nicomachean Ethics is a question raised by Socrates and discussed by Aristotle’s mentor and friend, Plato as well: how men is supposed to live to have a good life. According to Aristotle, the highest good in the life of human beings is happiness and the most important task of the human being is to achieve this happiness, which is possible only by using the right methods, taking the right action and developing the right kind of habits. He defines ethics as being a practical discipline, that is, principles that influence everyday life and not only a set of theories and abstract rules.

The ten books start with a definition of the aim of the book and of the concept of happiness, then the work moves on to define and provide examples of moral virtues such as temperance and always choosing the golden middle way, courage, generosity, magnanimity, wittiness and gentleness, justice and fairness. He dedicates a separate chapter to intellectual virtue, then another one of the impediments to virtue. Book VIII and IX speak about friendship and partnership, while Book X provides a theory of pleasure, happiness and the importance of education and good laws.

The Nicomachean Ethics is among Aristotle’s most influential works. It was one of the writings that had the most significant impact on medieval philosophy, that contributed both directly and indirectly to the development of modern philosophy, theology and legal theory. The logically constructed arguments and principles presented by Aristotle continue to be influential even today, providing complex, but at the same time easy to understand guidance for the modern man.
