Description

In this writing, the well-known British philosopher James Allen offers a complete guidance on how people can become the masters of their own destinies, instead of being enslaved by fate.

The opening chapter of the book offers an interesting presentation of the way in which the idea of a supreme force controlling their path in life, from birth to death, formed in people’s mind. The author says that the creation of great poets and writers had a great influence on the perception of destiny, offering some illustrative examples.

However, Allen disagrees with the idea that one’s fate is predetermined and the individual cannot do anything to change its course. On the contrary, the author says, the destiny of people is heavily influenced by their actions, being a sum of all their deeds’ consequences.

Once his theory is expressed, the writer continues by offering the readers the instruments with the help of which they can become the masters of their own fate. Concentration, purpose, meditation, building of the life and mind and self-control are just some of the “tools” that, according to Allen, have to be used by those who want to achieve this goal.

To each of the mentioned values, and to many more, the author dedicates a chapter in this book. The conclusion is that, through self-improvement, all the obstacles in one’s life can be surpassed, the fatalism of an implacable destiny being replaced with the joy an accomplished task brings.

Born on the 28th of November, 1864, in Leicester, James Allen came from a family of workers with very little education. His literary career began at the age of 37, in 1901, when he published From Poverty to Power.
