Description

A significant philosophical landmark birthed from the work of Descartes, and managing to inspire great literary minds, such as Goethe or Coleridge, Spinoza’s definitions of God, mind and substance, as shown in The Ethics are considered by many thinkers of the time to be a work ahead of its time, of significant beauty and near logical perfection.

Praised and criticized by many, Spinoza’s numerous axioms and definitions referring to anything from the nature of thoughts to the ways in which the relationship between the physical and mental world may influence our perception of truth, existence or continuity, still intrigue many people today, and his Ethics have proved to be a challenging set of concepts for creationists and scientific minds alike.

The book contains no less than 200 pages in which Spinoza starts by tackling some of the most delicate topics of all: the existence of the Divine and the origin of the mind. Later on, he also touches upon both general and specific topics relating to human existence, such as the understanding of basic human emotions and the deeper ideologies revolving around concepts of bondage and freedom that have intrigued philosophers for hundreds and even thousands of years.

Through his fresh and intriguing take on some of the topics he talks about, Spinoza comes up with naturalist definitions which few have touched upon in 15th century. Among them are his well-known ideas about the independent and infinite existence of substance, or the fact that nature in and of itself is not independent from God.
