Description

A private investigator and his trusted associate find themselves caught up in a strange case that initially defies all explanation in Burton Egbert Stevenson’s The Gloved Hand. Can they solve the mystery before things get out of hand? Two unusual figures seemingly floating on thin air, a strange light exploding into a shower of sparks and a mysterious young lady are all the right ingredients to a detective story that will challenge your thinking and lead you to feel like no viable explanation could ever explain what’s really happening.

Although the mystery might give you the impression that it’s easy to solve, Stevenson has plenty of tricks up his sleeve to keep readers intrigued, despite the fact that he wrote the book in 1913. The story centers around Mr. Lester, a private investigator and lawyer who is soon pulled into the story by his friend Mr. Godfroy. When a man is killed, his daughter, together with her would be fiancée become the main suspects, and it’s up to Mr. Lester to reveal what truly might be going on.

With elements of intrigue, suspense and a good dose of the supernatural, Stevenson’s story has virtually everything you can possibly expect from a fascinating crime mystery of the early 20th century. It introduces readers to sub-plots centering on greed, mystical phenomena that seemingly can’t be explained, and even a yogi and his helper, who just add to the mystical aura of the story.

You’ll definitely be in for a ride, and when you find out how the author decides to help the story unfold and further develop his characters toward the end of the book, you’ll find that his methodical approach and initially slower going action will be well worth the wait. Modern readers still enjoy this story even a century after it was written, and if you like a good mystery, you will simply love The Gloved Hand.
