Description

In this short literary work, the story teller is a superintendent on the K. & A. railroad, in the final years of the 19th century. The train is mugged some place in the Arizona barren land. Umpteen mishaps enmesh this young superintendent with a tint of fiery romance by a gorgeous passenger.

This mystery detective story consists of these: The Party On Special No. 218; The Holding-Up Of Overland No. 3; A Night’s Work On The Alkali Plains; Some Rather Queer Road Agents; A Trip To The Grand Canon; The Happenings Down Hance’s Trail; A Change Of Base; How Did The Secret Leak Out?; A Talk Before Breakfast; Waiting For Help; The Letters Change Hands Again; An Evening In Jail; A Lesson In Politeness; “Listeners Never Hear Anything Good”; The Surrender Of The Letters; and A Gloomy Good-By.

Paul Leicester Ford was a US writer and biographer. He scribed the life stories of George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and others, edited the oeuvres of Thomas Jefferson, and wrote copious novels, which had ample prestige, such as The Honorable Peter Stirling, Story of an Untold Love, Janice Meredith, Wanted a Matchmaker, and Wanted a Chaperon.

Paul’s edition of The Writings of Thomas Jefferson is still remarked as among the monuments of American historical scholarship, establishing the archetype for documentary editing for about 5 decades, until the presentation of the first volume of The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, edited by Julian P. Boyd. Paul’s edition continues to be worthy for its veracity of replication from original compositions and its mindful explication of the documents selected for printing. Paul was at his greatest dandy to Thomas, dissonant with Julian, whose scholars at times assailed him as an unimportant apologist for Thomas. The Ford edition were presented in two adaptations, with editions of 10 volumes and a small numbered edition in 14 volumes referred as the “Federal” edition.
