Jacques Heath Futrelle was a United States journalist and spy author. He is most famous for his short mystery fiction starring Professor Augustus S. F. X. Van Dusen, also referred to as The Thinking Machine for his use of reason to any and every circumstances. Jacques breathe his last upon the plummeting of the RMS Titanic.

Jacques was born in Pike County, Georgia. He became a contributor for the Atlanta Journal, where he started their sports section; the New York Herald; the Boston Post; and the Boston American, where, in 1905, his Thinking Machine creation was first seen in an episodic adaptation of the short tale, The Problem of Cell 13.

Jacques stopped working at the Boston American in 1906 to concentrate his interest in composing stories. He had a harbor-view residence constructed in Scituate, Massachusetts, which he named Stepping Stones, and spent all of his life there up to his passing in 1912.

His final piece, My Lady’s Garter, was printed after his death in 1912. Jacques’ widow wrote in the novel, “To the heroes of the Titanic, I dedicate this my husband’s book”, below is a photograph of her deceased husband.
