Description

The Confession is a great mystery novel by the author often called America’s Agatha Christie. Published in 1921, the novel was just as appreciated by the audience as Rinehart’s previous novels and it continues to be considered one of the masterpieces of the genre, a story that focuses on psychological insight and leads the reader to the conclusion without involving violence.

The novel starts with the protagonist, a spinster called Agnes Blakistonand her maid, Maggie moving to the countryside where they rent a house for the summer to escape the unbearable heat of the city. The rent is unusually low and their landlady wants them to stay as long as possible. Agnes and Maggie finds out the reason for these favorable conditions and hospitality soon enough: the house seems to be haunted, there are mysterious phone calls in the middle of the night and someone seems to move around the house without permission from the dwellers. A terrifying atmosphere starts to build up and it soon turns out that the landlady harbors some pretty terrifying secrets herself – secrets that she is determined to keep hidden at all costs. However, all the mysteries get sorted out eventually, but the events will keep the reader guessing all the time.

The Confession is among Rinehart’s best novels, but it is not the most widely known. Her name is probably more known as the writer of novels such as The Circular Staircase, The Door or The Yellow Room. She also wrote poems, short stories, travelogues, plays, essays and two autobiographies. With over 40 novels and plays, a dozen of short story collections and many other writings belonging to various genres, Rinehart was one of the most prolific and most successful writers of her time, appreciated during her lifetime just as much as after her death in 1958.
