The story starts in an intriguing way, becoming only more exciting as it progresses. It all begins with a number of seemingly unrelated, but scary events and some assaults that take place at a manor house. Then comes a murder that is followed by an investigation – the servants see elusive figures that appear, then disappear without a trace and someone is mysteriously treading the stairs, so everyone accuses supernatural forces, but Quintus Oakes, the most level-headed detective of them all is not deceived by appearances and knows that there must be a rational explanation to what is going on and he sets off to find that explanation.

The approach he uses is worthy of the best detectives in literature, Sherlock Holmes being certainly the master of logic and rational thinking, but Quintus Oakes following close behind. His conclusions are right most of the time – he follows red herrings occasionally, but never for too long and he figures out the key to the mystery in the right moment. As for the other characters, some of them have a guilty consciousness, others are just superstitious, but one thing is true: they are all surprised by the findings of detective Quintus Oakes.
