Description

Early detective literature is filled with male figures, from the prominent Sherlock Holmes, to Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot. Very few authors have actually engaged in writing about female detectives, one of them being the prominent Baroness Orczy – author of The Scarlet Pimpernell and additional works of great value, such as The Emperor’s Candlesticks. Lady Molly of Scotland Yard is her unique set of 12 stories featuring Molly Robertson-Kirk, one of the earliest female detectives ever created as a fictional character.

Although not necessarily a feminist work, Lady Molly of Scotland Yard definitely implies the ability of a female character to enter the dangerous and oftentimes considered improper world of police work. In the early 1910s, the idea of a female detective was unheard of, but the Baroness skillfully gets around the issue by introducing Molly’s motive for becoming a detective: the prospect of saving her fiancee from a grossly false accusation.

The unique storyline,as well as Molly’s somewhat eccentric abilities that have often put to shame many of her male contemporaries, are all quite entertaining when viewed in the light of current events and the state of society as it is today. However, the stories themselves are as fascinating, engaging and mysterious as any of Arthur Conan Doyle’s works.

Molly’s main quality is her ability to spot clues and make deductions that male detectives and police officers would hardly think of.Combined with her heightened intelligence and keen sense of observation, this makes her perfectly suitable for solving murders such as that of Mary Nicholls,in the small village of Ninescore.

Will she be able to prove herself where no other member of the “female department” was able to venture?
