Description

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle first introduces Sherlock Holmes to the public in the book a Study in Scarlet. Being a practicing physician, Sir Arthur was fascinated by one of his teachers who encouraged the class to diagnose problems by looking for clues that the patients exhibit. This formed the basis of his Sherlock Holmes detective short stories and novels.

A Study in Scarlet is a classic detective story that makes use of intricate clues provided by the characters in the story to solve the murder mystery presented. In the story, the world is introduced to Sherlock Holmes through a narration of his best friend, Dr. Watson. This is the first case that Holmes investigates and it’s about a murder that has been committed in Brixton, England.

Sherlock Holmes carries a parallel investigation with the detectives but it’s the detectives ho first announce that they have solved the mystery and have put the killer in jail. This however turns out to be an incorrect arrest as another murder is committed when the arrested “killer” is in jail. Immediately, Sherlock Holmes announces that he knows the killer and will arrest him soon. It later turns out that the killer is a cab driver, whom Holmes had tricked into coming to his home to carry his luggage for a purported trip.

Any person who loves detective and crime thrillers will enjoy A Study in Scarlet. Budding detective writers can also get useful hints from the presentation and clues that build up the story to the eventual conclusion when the murdered is arrested. The book has been reprinted many times and is still widely read today, this just goes on to show the appeal and prowess that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle exhibited.
