The disappearance the novel revolves around is that of Lady Dykes, a wealthy London socialite who goes missing after having boarded a train on Victoria Station. There is not one, but two detectives following the Lady’s tracks – Bruce, the amateur sleuth and Inspector White, the professional detective of the Scotland Yard in charge of the case. The two investigators get the same clues, but sometimes they draw completely different conclusions and the readers are also invited to come to their own. The investigation follows the clues not only on British land, but in Monte Carlo and in Wyoming as well and the two men meet lots of interesting characters on the way, all of them involved in the disappearance in one way or another.

Louis Tracy’s storytelling style and the way he weaves the events to make an exciting plot full of gaps to be filled by the reader’s imagination makes A Mysterious Disappearance an excellent read. The story starts somewhat slowly, but it accelerates and reaches extraordinary traveling speed soon, making the book a real page turner, very difficult to put down before the end.
