Murder Madness is Murray Leinster’s first full-length science fiction novel. Published first in four installments in Astounding magazine in 1930, then in 1931 in book form, the novel paints an apocalyptic picture of world controlled by a tyrant.

The novel features a mad genius, a scientist who wants to rule the world by poisoning people with a deathly drug that induces a murderous rage prior to killing people. The desperate situation calls for a hero and he emerges to stop the mad tyrant and save the world, but not before he goes through the most dangerous adventures, risking his life all the time and proving his worth to the world. Some people disappear, others die from the drug after sinking into a murderous rage and Bell, a secret agent sets off to trace the Master to his hiding place in South America to put an end to the disastrous situation.

Murder Madness is Leinster’s first complete novel, but his name and work were familiar to science fiction fans long before the novel came out. His first story entitled The Foreigner was published in 1916 in Smart Set, a prestigious literary magazine of the period and many others followed in other popular pulp magazines such as Argosy, Esquire, Collier’s Weekly, Breezy Stories, Snappy Stories and many others.

Though Leinster was mostly known as a science fiction writer and is credited as the inventor of parallel universe stories, not all his stories belong to the genre – he proved to be equally prolific and talented at writing jungle stories, detective stories, westerns and romantic stories, even radio plays, television and movie scripts. He published under his real name, William Fitzgerald Jenkins, as well under various pen names, including the name he used for Murder Madness and Louisa Carter Lee, the name he used for his romantic stories.
