In a Bishop’s Carriage – A Fun, Dark and Interesting Read

Miriam Michelson has written what could be considered as one of the most psychologically complex, yet entertaining and engaging books of the turn of the 20th century. Considered a best seller in 1904, there are plenty of important aspects that make this book so special, whether you think of its unusual and quite rare depiction of life in an orphanage at that time, or the heroine’s remarkable ability to raise up to various challenges without losing what makes her who she is.

Nancy ‘Nance’ Olden and her boyfriend Tom are a somewhat unscrupulous young pair that organizes cons and criminal activities right from the start of the book. The novel is presented from Nance’s point of view (as narrator), and follows her adventure as she is surrounded by a variety of complex and interesting characters, some of which make a lasting impression on her – such as the Bishop, who basically tells her he wishes she was his daughter, winning her undying affection.

One of the most remarkable aspects associated with this book is that Nance’s character constantly evolves throughout each set of unexpected or eventful happenings that she guides us through. Each adventure she lives through seems to have higher stakes and push her closer and closer to her limits, but her strong and resilient spirit never truly gives in to these challenges.

Unlike many novels published in this era, In a Bishop’s Carriage, the events involved seem to elegantly blend in the fun with an atmosphere filled with a more romantic and serious hue, with the main character often being able to find help when she needs it the most – such as the time when Fred Obermuller offers Nance a second chance in life by giving her a job.
