The Diary of a Superfluous Man by Ivan Turgenev

Those who love Russian Realism and would like to possess and enjoy one of the masterpieces of 19th century Russian literature and a masterpiece of world literature as well, Ivan Turgenev’s The Diary of a Superfluous Man is certainly a must-have and a must-read.

Turgenev was the writer who voiced the disappointment and alienation not only of his own generation, but of 19th century Western civilization as well, this novella being one of the most poignant expressions of the period’s general attitude towards life. The Diary of a Superfluous Man is the story of the life of an ailing man as he tells it on his deathbed, reflecting upon his life as he anticipates the end of it. The narration by the dying man starts with the narrator’s childhood, but the event that is narrated at great length, the story that takes up the most part of the narration is the narrator’s love for a girl who does not return this love, but loves a Prince instead. The novella revolves around this unhappy love story because the narrator considers it to be the string of events that are the most illustrative of his superfluous existence.

Alienation is a universal literary theme ever since the beginning of Modernism and Turgenev succeeds in depicting alienation in a truly humane, colorful manner. The Diary of a Superfluous Man is by no means a happy story, but it is certainly a story that depicts the modern attitude towards life.
