Description

When most people think of P.G. Wodehouse, they think Jeeves and Wooster and the many hilariously witty novels that he managed to engaged his readers within his unmistakably characteristic style. Before the Jeeves era, however, you might know Wodehouse as being a more “mild mannered” author who wrote novels such as Love Among the Chickens and, yes, The White Feather.

Those who may be familiar with Wodehouse’s later work might wonder whether this novel was penned by the same man who came up with the impossibly droll situations and remarks that had you laughing senseless while reading the Jeeves books. Nevertheless, the style is quite unmistakable, and the story itself is similarly engaging, offering the reader plenty of opportunities to immerse him/herself in what could be termed an interesting and quite complex storyline overall.

Like in his later novels, Wodehouse’s talent shines through the depiction of his characters, rather than the plot itself – which simply depicts a young pugilist who, after having felt remorse at losing an important game, takes it upon himself to receive training from a professional boxer.

A realistic and serious young lad, our hero, Sheen, isn’t quick to start any types of confrontations, while his mentor, Joe Bevan, is a former Shakespearian actor who is determined to see the boy transformed from a disinterested and overall sympathetic lad to a real boxing champion.

As you analyze the various traits of the characters, you will find many of them are similar to characters appearing in later novels, such as the young boys who invite themselves to tea, or some of the political figures of the town.

The White Feather is definitely an interesting transitional novel that saw Wodehouse transform from an overall valuable writer to the outstanding author we know and love today.
