Description

Piccadilly Jim is a Wodehouse classic – according to some, it is Wodehouse at his best humor. Humorous, multiple plotlines, concealed and mistaken identities, kidnapping, strange inventions are all components masterfully organized by Wodehouse into what is perhaps one of his funniest books.

The quick-paced story is funny every step of the way. The protagonist is Jimmy Crocker, nicknamed Piccadilly Jim, a playboy getting into trouble wherever he goes. He decides to leave England and go to New York using a different name. On his way there he falls in love with a beautiful girl, but this is only the beginning of a journey that takes more than one surprising turns. The story revolves around the title character, but the reader meets characters familiar from other Wodehouse novels, too. Jimmy is in fact the nephew of Nesta, mother to Ogden Ford, both known from The Little Nugget. and there are numerous other typical Wodehousian characters, too, types known from the Jeeves novels and other stories.

The novel has many different story lines that seem to entangle to make up a really complicated plot, but everything works out just marvelously by the end, just as one could expect from a Wodehouse masterpiece. The plot is funny enough in itself, but the language used makes the novel even more entertaining – word plays and jokes come in a rapid succession, making the reader looking forward not only to the next twist in the story, but also to the next pun.

The novel was first published in the U.S. in 1917 and it came out in England only a year later, in 1918. It enjoyed tremendous success at the time and it has been made into film three times since then – the first adaptation dates back to 1919, then there was another in 1936 and the latest one came out in 2004, all of them featuring the biggest names in the film industry.
