Description

Faces and Places by Henry W. Lucy is an interesting, often humorous and always colorful collection of articles about travel in the 19th century. The English journalist and parliamentary sketch-writer became famous for the witty and intriguing manner he looked upon his contemporaries, members of the Parliament or not and we are right to say that his articles are just as thought-provoking for today’s readers as they were when they were initially published, in the last years of the 19th and the first decades of the 20th century.

The first article of the collection features “Fred” Burnaby and it depicts a trip taken in a balloon; in Easter on Les Avants and in Night and Day on the Cars in Canada we can read about the writer’s adventures while he was traveling by rail, while in several other articles (A Night on a Mountain, Mosquitoes and Monaco, and Oysters and Arcachon) we can read about a topic that was so much written about, by so many writers at the end of the 19th century: the Victorian Englishmen and how they think of Europe.

Three of the articles in the collection, With Peggotty and Ham, A Cinque Port and Christmas Eve at Watts’s, take the reader to Kent, a region well-known to Lucy because he owned a country house there, while several other articles treat topics of historical interest:

A Wreck in the North Sea is about the ship “Deutschland”;

A Historic Crowd is about a trial of great public interest, the Tichborne Claimant in 1871;

The Battle of Merthyr is about the Merthyr Riots of 1831

The Prince of Wales is about the future king of England, Edward VII.

Poking fun at his contemporaries and at the establishment as such, Lucy’s acid criticism and his vivid style provide great entertainment to the reader in our times, too – if you care for interesting stories and elegant, sarcastic humor, you will surely love this collection.
