Description

An outstanding example of Wodehousian prose, A Damsel in Distress entertains and amuses with a story that mixes romance, hilarious happenings and a masterfully set plot that revolves around not less masterfully penned characters.

Published in 1919, first in the U.S. and only then, a few days later in the U.K., the novel is one of Wodehouse’s early writings, not so well-rounded as the others, but already bearing the signature features of the typical Wodehousian text. The novel is in fact a complicated story of love in which everyone suffers from a love life crisis. It also features a complicated plot, with lots of detours and the compulsory happy ending when everything works out marvelously and every piece of the puzzle finds its place in the big picture. The story starts slowly, the introductions are long, but once the right atmosphere is established, the events speed up, making up a truly fascinating read and definitely exploring the funny possibilities of confusions to the maximum.

Every human character trait is represented in this masterpiece by P. G. Wodehouse: we have the single-minded aristocrat, the Earl of Marshmoreton, the pompous aristocrat, Lord Belpher, the knight in the shining armor, George Bevan, to mention just a few, so the reader is in for a real treat.

A Damsel in Distress is not only a well-plotted novel – it is also well-written. The style is typically Wodehousian, light, entertaining, witty – the best of Brit humor, indeed. The dialogues are exceptionally well-crafted – fast flowing and high spirited.

Though many Wodehouse fans would not include A Damsel in Distress into the canon, the novel definitely has an important place in the writer’s oeuvre as a great, sometimes melancholic, sometimes hilariously funny romance that gives the reader a lot to laugh about and a lot to contemplate about as well.
