Description

We all believe ourselves to be limited by our dependence on the five senses – sight and sound in particular. However, even as you read through Helen Keller’s masterpiece, The World I Live in, you’ll find that you can’t really help but point out the obvious irony of how this amazing woman – of only 24 years of age at the time – managed to describe the processes of her consciousness and her interaction with the world around her in such a remarkably clear and concise manner.

Helen Keller was born both with the ability to see and hear, but became deaf-blind when she was only 19 months old, suffering from an illness that doctors couldn’t quite describe – claiming it could have been caused by either meningitis or scarlet fever. Her childhood was certainly a difficult one. Struggling to learn how to communicate was especially hard, but with the help of her dedicated governess Anne Sullivan – who was herself visually impaired – Keller learned to communicate by spelling words with her hand, and her dark world suddenly became much more expansive.

The World I Live in is one of Helen Keller’s most impressive works. Having become an accomplished author and an extremely skilled writer despite her disabilities, she managed to create a book that soon became one of the most extensive and impressive studies of human consciousness ever to be put on paper.

In the book, Helen describestheworld as she sees it,and speaks of her hands and their invaluable use in bringing her a complete view of the world around her simply through the sense of touch. She describes her interaction with her faithful dog, the sensation of the touch of someone else’s hand, or of the delicate wings of a butterfly. Helen also describes her journey from darkness to learning, as she very slowly managed to master her unique communication skills to become a writer.
