Emily Pauline Johnson also known as Mohawk as Tekahionwake meaning double life, was a Canadian writer and a famous performer in the later 19th century. Johnson was highly regarded for her exemplary poems and performances of her Aboriginal heritage. Her father was a Mohawk hereditary clan chief of mixed ancestry. She was also influenced by her mother who was an English immigrant. They lived at Chiefswood outside Brantford, Ontario. She was the youngest of four children of George Henry Martin Johnson and Emily Susanna Howells Johnson.

Johnson’s poetry was distributed in Canada, the United States, and Great Britain. Her works were one of the highlights of the Canadian literature. E. Pauline Johnson wrote and performed in amateur theatres. One of her hobbies was traveling by canoe, not to mention, writing several poems.

After her father’s death, they left their home at Chiefswood and moved with her mother and sister in Ontario. She performed in theatres to support her remaining family. Johnson supported her mother until she died.

Johnson was commissioned to write a poem in honor of Joseph Brant, the notable Mohawk leader of Brantford who served at the American Revolutionary War. She further defined her career as a Canadian writer, with frequent publications of Globe, The Week, and Saturday Night. She was one of the distinguished authors of Canada in national literature. She was recognized and praised by Theodore Watts-Dunton, an English critic and poet, for her poem “In the Shadows” and referred her as the most interesting poet during that time.
