Description

In 1860, an expedition led by Robert O’Hara Burke sought to cross the Australian continent from South to North and back, starting from Melbourne, and covering a distance of more than 3,200 km. While the journey was not as long in distance as many others, the adventure was a difficult one, since much of the continent’s inland regions were yet to be discovered. Burke and his men were to be the very first Europeans to set foot in these wild lands filled with dangers and wonders that one could scarcely have imagined.

This is the account of the expedition written by Andrew Jackson, and based on notes left by Burke himself following the tragedy that occurred at the end of the expedition. A detailed and well-organized writing, it covers the entire journey, and was published just one year after Burke’s venture ended in disaster.

Despite having left Melbourne in the winter, Burke’s party made good progress, even after having to divide upon the crossing of Darling River, on the way to their final destination at the Gulf of Carpentaria to the north. However, the return journey became infinitely more dangerous and difficult, leading to several other expeditions having to be dispatched to provide assistance under the most trying of circumstances.

Although the venture ended in tragedy, Burke and his brave explorers remain in memory as an important part of Australian history, as the first ones to ever dare to travel through the challenging wild regions of the Australian continent.

This is one of the richest and most detailed accounts of the early geography and history associated with Australia’s inland continental areas. Whether you’re a history buff, or you just want to enjoy reading about a real life adventure started through an expedition of fearless men, Andrew Jackson’s 1860 expedition account is definitely for you.
