This is a true story that takes place during the years when the Gold Fever was in full effect in the United States, between the late 1850s and early 1860s. Due to the economic downfall that occurred in this period, many souls ventured forth to search for gold in the treacherous mountains West of Denver, and even gathered and bought expensive supplies and equipment to aid them in their venture.

A Gold Hunter’s Experience is a chronicle written by Chalkley J. Hambleton about his own experience being part of a group of people that invested every effort, as well as significant amounts of money into a journey that could allegedly lead them to resounding success, as well as enormous wealth.

To understand the background of the story, it is important to note that Hambleton was – like many others during this period – quite desperate to try his luck with gold mining. Despite a lack of experience, the scarcity of jobs and business opportunities have driven him to consider a seemingly difficult, but also potentially profitable undertaking. Once he traveled to Pike’s Peak together with four other determined men, his chances seemed to be increasing quite substantially.

With 24 tons of mining equipment, the four ventured forth through the Great Planes, from Missouri to Colorado. Years later, when Humbleton became a successful real estate developer and attorney in Chicago, he wrote A Gold Hunter’s Experience, speaking of the real treasure of wisdom that he and his companions have managed to attain during their journey.

The story is more than valid today – perhaps even to a greater extent than it was in Chalkley Humbleton’s time. With everyone trying to hunt for money and business opportunities, we often have to be faced with the reminder that the purpose of life has to be more than just an empty search for impressive treasures.
